COMUNIDAD WRU

Comunidad WRU is a remarkable non-profit organization with a primary focus on the betterment of Northern Manhattan through movement and access. For over a decade, they have been making a significant impact on the Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood communities by providing free access to various fitness activities. Founded in 2013 by Hector Espinal and Joshua Mock in Washington Heights, the organization was born out of a desire to address a significant gap – the lack of representation in running.

Their mission is simple yet profound – to create an inclusive space where everyone, regardless of their race, gender, age, or athletic ability, feels welcomed and valued. We Run Uptown has successfully fostered a running ecosystem North of Central Park by promoting diversity and breaking barriers. As a result, they have empowered other run crews, clubs, and collectives to start their own movements, spreading the ethos of unity and inclusivity throughout different communities.

However, We Run Uptown is more than just a fitness and sports organization. They have taken it upon themselves to address the issues affecting their community, demonstrating a deep commitment to creating a positive impact. Among their various community outreach initiatives, PROJECT CLEAN-UP stands out as an exemplary effort. This monthly plogging event not only aims to clean up the neighborhood but also strives to educate community members on the importance of recycling and creating a more eco-friendly environment uptown. Through this, they instill a sense of responsibility towards the environment and promote sustainable practices.

Another initiative, La Funda, showcases We Run Uptown’s dedication to supporting at-risk youth in the area. This quarterly relay race is designed to get these vulnerable young individuals off the streets. By offering cash-prize incentives, the organization encourages them to participate in a positive activity that promotes healthy habits, teamwork, and camaraderie. Through La Funda, We Run Uptown is investing in the community’s future by nurturing and empowering its youth.

The impact of We Run Uptown extends far beyond fitness and sport. By nurturing a supportive environment, empowering communities, and addressing critical social issues, they have become a beacon of hope in Northern Manhattan. Hector Espinal and Joshua Mock’s vision has created a legacy of positive change, making We Run Uptown an inspiration to many and a catalyst for community-driven progress.
